I am pleased to share another outcome of the Africa Prime Initiative’s (API) commitment to uplifting #African talent.

Currently on display at #LomanArt in Dakar, the ‘Soppiku: Métamorphose – The Evolution of Artistic Identity’ exhibition showcases the work of five emerging #Senegalese artists: Amy Celestina Ndione, Fatou Mandoye Mbengue, Laye Thione, Mouhamad Jawad, and Xaadim Bamba Mbow. Each artist has received a grant of US$2,000 from #API to support their artistic development and elevate their global recognition.

The exhibition opening on 12th October was a success, featuring a guided exhibition tour led by curator Linjie Zhou. Attendees had the chance to engage with the artists, learning about the transformative themes present in their works and their individual contributions to the exhibition.

‘Soppiku: Métamorphose’ not only celebrates artistic growth but also underscores the importance of nurturing local talent in Senegal. A heartfelt thank you to the artists and Loman Art for bringing this exhibition to life.

In the past, Africa’s news outlets have been apprehensive to challenge the work of governments due to the political and economic obstacles – but finally, the media is increasingly willing to scrutinise leaders and promote effective leadership. AFRICA’S STORYTELLING TRADITION MUST PERSIST

Storytelling has long played a central role in African societies with storytellers often holding a special place as the keepers of history and tradition. However, with migration, Africa’s stories have left the continent and are now disseminated across the world. Taking full ownership of our stories through new Afro-centric content requires us to reclaim our rich storytelling culture. With digitalisation, we have observed a renewed and increased interest from the diaspora in stories from home, as well as a strong desire from African creatives to share their authentic stories with a wider international audience. Observing these two dynamics has made it apparent that only by mutually strengthening collaboration between the diaspora and locals will we be able to ensure our storytelling tradition endures.
